Free2Rock: T-Shirt Designs for Freedom

Free2Rock is a campaign led by Not For Sale, an organization committed to ending human slavery in our lifetime. The organization connects, engages, educates, and empowers abolitionists, groups, and businesses around the world to fight the battle against modern day slavery. Not For Sale is committed to raising awareness about the issue of human trafficking in our world, and bringing an end to the injustice as soon as possible. Free2Rock

As part of their campaign, they have organized Free2Rock, where a band or celebrity will collaborate on a new t-shirt design each month that supports freedom and ending slavery. The Free2Rock campaign is a powerful combination of the arts – music and design – and justice, through the movement against modern day slavery. This month’s t-shirt is already sold out, but the design, which focuses specifically on the problem of sex trafficking in Amsterdam’s Red Light District, can be seen in the picture at the right.

You can find out more about the campaign through this video from Not For Sale:

Help Portrait: Doing Good by Taking Pictures

Help Portrait

You may have noticed events popping up in your city or nearby communities called Help Portrait. These events are part of a non-profit based in Franklin, Tennessee. Help Portrait, as its website states, is a “global movement of photographers using their time, gear and expertise to give back to those in need.” The organization’s mission is for photographers to use their skills to take pictures of people who can’t afford professional photos – the poor, the sick, the homeless, and other people in need in their communities and around the world. The basic premise, according to the website, is: 1. Find someone in need. 2. Take their portrait. 3. Print their portrait. 4. And deliver them.

Help Portrait events and Help Portrait-inspired events are happening all over the country, even internationally. Many are organized through Facebook, an easy way to spread the word among the local community. I’m based in North Carolina, where Help Portrait Raleigh was held last year, and where a portrait event is being held in Durham a few days from now. If you’re a photographer, be on the lookout for events near you where you can help those in need by using your talent and equipment to snap their pictures. If you just want to be a part of the movement, you can find a Help Portrait event near you and go help with greeting, organizing, taking videos or other tasks.

Arts for Good: The Beginning

Arts for GOod

Welcome to the Arts for Good blog! My name is Christie Ray Harrison, and this blog is an extension of my passions for both creativity and social justice. The arts are an avenue of communication, and they are being put to use in a variety of ways to bring freedom and justice to people around the world. As I come across places where creativity and compassion intersect, I’ll be sharing those with you.
